which was a continuation from:
Pro active upgrade cost tracking questions thread.

What is a Pro-active Online Upgrade?
The simple answer: it is a limited special upgrade that may be offered at a time of BA's choosing after your booking is ticketed up to and including online check-in. The offer, if it happens (and this is not guaranteed) will appear in Manage My Booking, either via BA.com or the mobile app. There is no email notification, klaxon sound or flashing beacons to alert you - so now you know why its called a Pro-active Online Upgrade

Please note, POUG rates differ from the rates offered at the airport (see, Current Airport Upgrade Thread) and also the rate offered when you click on the “Upgrade my class of travel with money” link from within MMB, or the “Upgrade to the next available cabin” blue/grey banner in the app.

In summary
  • All POUGs earn full TPs and Avios for the upgraded cabin, subject to the original booking being paid for with cash.
  • POUGs are not usually offered on bookings with connections, such as bookings that combine UK domestic and shorthaul flights (a simple UK-USA single or return flight is generally open for POUG).
  • POUGs are offered on Hand-Baggage Only fares, if available
  • POUGs only become available after 48 hours of making your booking, until any time up to, and including OLCI. After being checked in you will not be offered a POUG.
  • POUGs do not seem to become available for travel agent bookings, until 2-3 days before departure (YMMV)
  • When checking in online (OLCI), you may get a POUG offer as one of the first screens to the check in process. This includes travel agency and corporate bookings, at least potentially.
  • POUGs are sometimes easier to spot on the App, but the cost and availability should be the same as with the main BA.com site.
  • POUGs cannot be requested from Service Centres, except that occasionally BA.com will not proceed with a POUG online and display a message inviting you to call the Service Centre to complete the transaction.
  • After a POUG has been purchased, the ticket become non changeable and non refundable, apart from government taxes.
  • If you get subject to an irrop after getting a POUG you should be rebooked into the upgraded cabin, subject to availability. If the irrop means that it is best to cancel the booking for a refund and then rebooked, you can't count on the upgrade being made available for the rebooked service, but you should get your POUG payment back.
A Wikipost has been set up to allow us to collectively track POUG rates on a route by route basis (this may not be visible if you are looking at this forum via a mobile device but is visible via FT's full site version). Please add your own successful results to the list including the month/year when the POUG was offered to you.

For reference, the terms and conditions of POUGs are here:

Am I right in thinking £440 for a POUG from WTP to CW for LHR-JFK (currently on the 787-10) is a pretty average offer? Tempted just to see what it’s like, but it’s not a redeye so I don’t especially need the flat bed. And I’m OWS so I get lounge and check-in perks as it is. Worth waiting to see if the offer reduces (and I won’t be upset if it increases as I won’t bother)?

Yes relatively average. It definitely won't (or shouldn't) be better at the airport with an AUP. WTP has a relatively high chance for upgrades given small cabin size.

It's so long since I have done a POUG (pre-Covid I think!) that I can't remember when they generally get offered? I have a LGW-AMS coming up in around 3 weeks and returning RTM-LCY a few days later. Then in Feb I have a LGW-TRN and returning MXP-LHR.

At the moment, all of these sectors are showing a pretty high price to upgrade.....circa £140 for each, which I guess is just a standard upgrade and not a POUG offer. Appreciate they can be offered at any time from 48 hours after booking but is there a usual good time to start looking, ie X days before flight for the much cheaper POUG pricing?

Evening all,

I’ve got a POUG for LGW-BGI, from WT to WTP for £129 travelling later this week.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me, but a couple of questions before I go for it:

If I phone the Exec club (I’m a silver member), will they have access to a similar option to CW?

Possibly one for the AUP thread, but is it worth hanging on til check in and ask about a AUP to CW when I’m there?

TIA.

I thought you could only upgrade by one cabin but I could be wrong!

And that’s the kind of critical detail that would be helpful to know 😂

For the LGW-BGI that I have this week, timing of offers has been approx:

c.3 weeks before flight: POUG for WT-WTP, at around£450 (I didn’t take too much notice as it was more than I was willing to pay). This then vanished, and clicking the “upgrade” in MMB was giving the option of over £1200 for the same (er, no thanks). It’s now the week of travel and I have a decent POUG offer.

Not sure whether timings for short haul POUG is likely to be similar, but from this I’d suggest the week leading up to travel is more likely.

True and I’ve tried to find official confirmation - from a brief search I think you can only upgrade one cabin but you can change your ticket to any class but for the fees and additional cost you would have paid anyway. Not a promotional offer.

I had two POUG offers on LHR-BHD over Christmas - £59 going out, offered several weeks in advance, and £89 coming back, offered a few days before travel (which I don't think anyone took them up on as there were 4 CE seats left at about £400 each when the offer appeared and still that many available a few hours before departure). The AUP on the return flight was £125.

Just my 2c worth and you may never get offered one but then again you might! I'd say from past experience then the higher the CE availability nearer the time then the more likely you might get one as BA like to maximise their revenue on all flights where possible.

They can also push the curtain back to offer them too of course despite availability showing. Worth checking daily I'd say given your flight is fairly close ish. There are many stories on FT of folks hanging out for any better offer then finding out nearer the flight the price of a POUG has shot up but then again.......... it's also possible it could come down!

If it's a proper POUG then you'll see a message in MMB and it should say 'Limited Special Offer' such as in this format.

https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/35545516-post760.html

It's always good for others if you can post anything you may receive and there are examples in the Wiki and buried posts in the 2023 thread of prices etc. Failing any POUG then as you know you can enquire about an upgrade at the airport.

Off the top of my head @KARFA fliesa largeamount of flights domestically and in Europe so he'll be in a far better position then me to comment as to POUG's showing.

Hope something works out for you!

Pete

usually start being offered about 2-3 days after you made the booking. but other than that, they can appear at any time up to the day of travel, and sometimes even offered during check in. i think best is just to check every few days.

Looking to upgrade on a booking to Bologna at the end of the month - currently offering me £230 return (company paid the economy fare) - according to the list above, cheaper deals have historically been made available.

I will only need 40 TP to reach Silver (first time!) so very tempted but not sure whether I should hold out for a few days to see if this comes down.

Unless it drops below £150ish it'll probably be cheaper to ask to buy an "airport upgrade" at the check-in desk. Should be between £100 and £150 (providing there is availability).
